Here are the notes from lesson 1 in the library. If you were absent, try to complete these tasks prior to class on Monday.
1. This is the link to the pathfinder for the project. You can watch the video called "Set Up for Success" here which explains how to import the project page and use Noodle Tools. Pause the video as you go through each step.
To find this page go to the library --> Pathfinders --> English --> ERE
You may need to update your Noodle Tools Account with the school user name and password (see me or ask someone for the pw)
2. Login to Noodle Tools and go to the public url link on the ERE page. Import the shared project by typing in your user name. You will get a confirmation and see it in your project list.
3. Create a new project in noodle tools.
Citation Style
When you choose your citation style, you will chose MLA or APA. MLA is most popular for humanities. APA is for psych. APA is closest to Science so if you are doing Science, choose APA. Choose advanced. Share it to the teacher drop box ERE Dousett 2014.
In class activity:
1. Now back to the mentor text project. Share the mentor text project with a friend, by clicking on add students as collaborators.
2. There are 3 mentor texts and some citations in the sample project. The To Do list is just to show you what they look like. You can use it to set your own goals in your own project.
3. Click on the works cited. There are 3 entries. On the bottom two citations, there is an annotation. Annotations are important and can be entire assignments. You may do an assignment where you don't write the paper, but do write an annotation for a number of sources.
An annotation is NOT an abstract.
Read the two annotations and determine" "What is an annotation?" and "What is the purpose of an annotation?" Use the checklist to determine if the annotation is a good annotation.
The work cited page and the annotations tell the author about the reader. The annotation is made for another researcher. Anyone researching the same topic would use an annotation to determine if the source is of use to them. It does not tell who the audience for the article would be, but helps the researcher. The purpose is to tell you about the article (a summary) very directly and to the point and can provide some data. It tells about the authors (their credentials of the writer of the paper). The annotation is unique because it isn't just a summary, but also offers a criticism/evaluation of the paper.
The article may be 10 pages, while the annotation is a paragraph. Remember to check years and make sure your papers are recent. Very few should be 10 years old.
Your annotation should include a summary, a review of the writer and a critique.
